INTRODUCTION

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the U.S. Geological Survey

(USGS) have been working with the Council of Europe, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC),

government agencies, and other organizations on a program for Reducing Earthquake Losses in the Eastern

Mediterranean Region (RELEMR). Approximately 17 RELEMR meetings have been held since the first meeting in

Cairo in 1993. Participants discussed regional approaches to improve seismic data (e.g., more accurate locations and

improved magnitude estimates) and they agreed to contribute to a RELEMR seismic hazard map. Probabilistic Seismic

Hazard Assessment (PSHA) and issues of interest to monitoring the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty have also been

discussed.

In the interest of reducing earthquake risk in the Mediterranean region, UNESCO, the Bogazici University - Kandilli

Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute are planning hold a workshop on Seismic Analysis and Earthquake

Hazard Assessment in the Mediterranean Region in Antakya (ancient Antioch), Turkey. The local hosts of the Conference

were the Governorate of Hatay, Municipality of Antakya and the local branch of the Chamber of Civil Engineers.

Contributed papers on seismology, hazard assessment, and earthquake engineering are invited More than 50 scientists

from approximately 25 countries in the Mediterranean region are invited to participate in the workshop that was held at the

City Hall in Antakya, Turkey, 11-14 December 2002.. This meeting was the 18th RELEMR meeting since RELEMR

establishment in 1993 .It was announced that as of this meeting the activities of RELEMR would not be on the Eastern

Mediterranean, but rather on the Mediterranean Region as a whole.
