Establishment of the Libyan National Seismological Network

In the framework of its national and regional efforts aimed at assessing and mitigating natural disaster risks, Libya is engaged with UNESCO in a multi-dimensional project on earthquake monitoring and research studies: "Establishment of the National Seismological Network" (LNSN).

The LNSN is a UNESCO-Libyan self-benefiting project which aims essentially at building capacity in earthquake monitoring and research, and at establishing a National Digital Seismological Network, as well as a Strong Motion Network in order to conduct studies of earthquake-related phenomena towards risk assessment and reduction in the region.

An up-to-date 15 broadband digital national network, utilizing state of the art VSAT communication technology, and a Central Processing Center, located in Ghariyan, Libya, are successfully installed and are fully operating since November 2005. The network is designed to monitor local, regional and teleseism activities, as well as to provide high quality data for research projects in regional and global seismology.

Extensive training programmes and workshops have contributed to the preparation of a number of national technicians and scientific staff for the operation and maintenance of the digital network and reinforced technical and scientific capabilities in earthquake data analysis and evaluating earthquake risk.

In progress, as another phase of this ongoing project, is the implementation of the Strong Ground Motion (SM) Network.
