From ShakeAlert to smartphones: Earthquake Early Warning now and beyond

POSTED ON DECEMBER 20, 2022 BY TEMBLOR
Getting notifications to people in the event of an earthquake is a key component of earthquake early warning systems. Apps like MyShake and companies like Google are leading the way.

Editor’s note: On Dec. 20, a magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California at 2:34 a.m. At least 3 million people received notices, many from their smartphone apps or Android Earthquake Alerts. The quake was big enough that many people’s alerts went through their Do Not Disturb settings and buzzed their phones. In the months following this quake, scientists will comb through the data of who received alerts, how many people, and whether the system worked as intended. Read below for more of how the earthquake early warning system developed in the U.S., how scientists are using the data, and how they hope to improve the system in the future.
