9th Gulf Seismic Forum 6-9 April 2015

Dealing with the damaging effects from earthquakes requires using data from other countries because seismic waves are not restricted by political boundaries. Because of this, cooperation between countries is crucial in better defining the effects from earthquakes as well as for seismologica and geophysical research. Investigations of seismic waves will indicate the nature of the mechanism of the earthquake that generate the seismic signals, the location of the earthquake as well as physical properties of the earth, through which the waves pass. This information can be used to mitigate the effects of damaging earthquakes, better define the location of faults in the earth and recognize areas that are prone to damage from earthquakes. The proposed forum will be the ninth after a series of conferences, which started in 2004, hosted by the University of Sharjah, with the last being hosted by Sultan Qaboos University 2013.

Goal

The Gulf Seismic Forum will work toward improving the capability to monitor earthquakes, provide data to mitigate the effects of damaging earthquakes and to improve the state of technology in the Arabian Gulf region and to share new research in seismicity and seismic risk and mitigation. And because we operate in a wide range of scientific and technical fields, the opportunity to move within the organization and expose yourself to new disciplines is always there. Below is a list of the positions we have available at the moment. If you can’t find something that’s right for you, make sure to check in regularly for new opportunities that come up.

Objectives

• To facilitate an Arabian Gulf region-wide cooperation, which can then address common technical issues in seismology, which will lead to a better understanding of the earthquake process, seismicity, and hazard mitigation.
• To better define seismic risk in the region and mitigate damaging effects.
• To work toward improving the coverage and quality of Kuwait National Seismic Networks at KISR by developing strategies for integrating data with Gulf Region networks.
• promote cooperation among scientists and engineers from KISR and other researchers in GCC in the field of seismic vulnerability through interchange of knowledge, ideas, results of research and practical experience
• Develop collaboration with international organization to integrate KNSN seismic data and models with decision support system.

CONFERENCE INFORMATION

CONFERENCE THEMES

• Technical session of contributed papers dealing with Gulf regional tectonics, seismicity and geology.
• Technical session of contributed papers dealing with seismic hazard assessment and mitigation.
