Dear Colleagues and Friends,

On the occasion of 50 years since the foundation of IZIIS, we are delighted to invite you to a “floating” International Conference on Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IZIIS-50) to take place on MSC ORCHESTRA cruiser during 12-16 May 2015.

This “floating” conference will bring together international research and developing communities, scholars and numerous segments of private industries to share the knowledge and the latest achievements of research and practice in earthquake disaster prevention and mitigation leading to improvement of earthquake safety in Europe and worldwide.

As always, IZIIS promises to make this event memorable and successful, believing that all delegates will find their participation both professionally rewarding and personally enjoyable.

In addition to the scientific program, the Conference will be an opportunity not only for networking of colleagues but also their families due to the excellent social program.

We are looking forward to seeing you on this amazing cruise through the blue, the green and the cities in between.

Prof. Dr. Mihail Garevski
President of MAEE
Chairman of IZIIS-50

The Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (IZIIS) is one of the oldest institutes in the World of this kind. It was established in 1965, i.e., two years after the catastrophic earthquake that struck Skopje and it represents part of the “SS Cyril and Methodius” University. The main activities of the Institute involve: basic research, education and application, i.e., cooperation with industry.
IZIIS was established upon the recommendation of the UN and UNESCO that provided the Institute with one of the first computers in the Balkan as well as financial assistance for the procuring of the latest, at that time, generations of computers, namely PDP and VAX. In 1966, at this Institute, there started the first post-graduate studies in earthquake engineering in Europe. The lectures at these international studies were held by world doyens in earthquake engineering. These studies have continuously been held up to present. In addition to these studies, the Institute organizes doctoral studies, as well.
IZIIS also has a long tradition of organization of short- and long- term courses in the earthquake engineering field. One of the most recognizable courses in the world was the specialized 11-week CADAC course that was held at the Institute for 26 years. Within the frames of this course, more than 520 candidates from over 74 developing countries worldwide were trained. Through this course, the Institute has played a key role in the formation of highly professional staff in the field of earthquake engineering and has contributed to the reduction of the seismic risk and the risk pertaining to other natural catastrophes in the developing countries.
It should be noted that the early bulletins of the European Association for Earthquake Engineering were published by IZIIS in 1978.
In 1974, the Institute established the first strong motion instrument network in former Yugoslavia which was the biggest in Europe at that time. These were SMA-1 instruments produced by Kinemetrics. It can be mentioned that Kinemetrics awarded to IZIIS the produced “silver” 3000th SMA instrument.
In 1981, the Institute installed the first MTS 5 x 5 m seismic shaking table for testing of full size models and elements. In 2011, the digital control system was upgraded from analogue to 5 component digital control system installed by MTS. Even today, it is one of the largest and best controlled shaking tables in Europe.
The institute was equally successful in realization of scientific-research and applicative projects. Along with other European scientific institutions, It participated in a number of FP5, FP6 and FP7 projects. It was also very successful in realization of projects (around 7) financed by NATO within the Science for Peace programme. The institute also realized numerous bilateral projects with the USA, China, Slovenia, etc. IZIIS has also given a big contribution to repair and strengthening of cultural historic monuments both in Macedonia and worldwide. Noteworthy among these are the projects on renovation of the old town cores along the Adriatic Sea coast after the Montenegro earthquake, the international project on post-earthquake restoration of monuments in Pagan (Burma) realized in cooperation with UNDP and UNESCO as well as the project on structural consolidation and conservation of the historic city of Angkor in Cambodia realized in cooperation with the World Monument Fund.
The Institute has also been very successful in realization of applicative projects. The project that involved in-situ testing, forced and ambient vibration testing as well as shaking table testing of the model of a 105 storey RC hotel building in Pyongyang (North Korea) can be mentioned as a curiosity.
Noteworthy are also the activities of IZIIS in Quebec, Canada. The Institute worked for Hydroquebec (the biggest producer of electric power in North America) for several years. Namely, it performed measurements of the dynamic characteristics of the biggest hydroelectric power plants in Quebec and a nuclear power plant. It is also worthwhile mentioning that IZIIS realized a consultancy project connected with seismic hazard assessment in the United Arab Emirates .
The Institute was on a number of missions after catastrophic earthquakes that happened in countries worldwide like Mexico, Pakistan, Turkey, Algeria, etc.
In cooperation with MAEE, it organized 4 big international conferences out of which the most important was the 14European Conference for Earthquake Engineering held in Ohrid in 2010.
In 2013, the Institute was proclaimed UNESCO Institute Category 2.
