Observatoriesand Research Facilities for European Seismology

ORFEUS (Observatories and Research Facilities for European Seismology),

http://www.orfeus-eu.org/index.html

ORFEUS (Observatories and Research Facilities for European Seismology), founded in 1987, is the non-profit foundation that aims at co-ordination and promoting digital, broadband (BB) seismology in the European-Mediterranean area. It has an international board of directors representing the 13 corporate founders (countries) that provide the basic funding to the foundation, an executive Committee, controlling the daily operations, and a staff, hosted by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI). Presently ORFEUS has around 60 academic and research organizations registered as paying participants representing 29 European countries. The core activities of ORFEUS are: gathering and providing waveform data through its coordinated Data Center(s) for the scientific community, and European co-ordination by leading and managing EC-projects and through its working groups on station siting, technical support, mobile networks and seismological software. ORFEUS works closely together with the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) under the auspices of the European Seismological Commission (ESC), is an active member of the International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks (FDSN).

The Observatories and Research Facilities for EUropean Seismology (ORFEUS) is funded by a system of corporate Founders from 12 European countries. Its activities are distributed between the ORFEUS Data Center (ODC) and four working groups and steered by an executive Committee and Board of Directors.

The ODC acts as a regional data center in the global system of seismological data centers and is hosted by the seismological division of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute in The Netherlands. It receives earthquake waveform data from seismic stations in the European-Mediterranean region through Data Collection Centers in and outside Europe and provides a long term archive- and distribution-service for seismological research. Waveform Data is accessible through a multitude of on-line and off-line request methods.

The Orfeus Data Center (ODC) provides access to high-quality seismological broad-band waveform data from stations and observatories in the European-Mediterranean region. The data is provided by observatories and research institutes in the European-Mediterranean region, since 2002 mostly in (near) real-time. At the ODC we provide a secure archive of the data and perform a quality control on the data.
The data (both continuous and event oriented) is available in different formats (SEED, GSE, SAC) through different protocolls (FTP, E-mail, WWW). Currently a number of more advanced data access procedures are rapidly being implemented.

Data users are kindly asked to refer to the VEBSN-contributors in any publication using data from ORFEUS.

Tutorial, explaining the data, formats, viewing and access methods:

•Types of available data (events, continuous, CURD, POND, archive, quality control)
•Request methods (Wilber(II), AutoDRM, NetDC, FTP,
• Data formats ((mini)SEED, GSE, SAC, little Endian (Intel), big Endian (SUN))
•Data viewing (QuakeExplorer, SeisGram implementation in Wilber(II))
•Other available datasets
Data retrieval (direct links to the existing data retrieval mechanisms)

•Event data:

oWilber - web-based event selection for data before 2002
oWilber II - web-based event selection for data from 2002
oFTP (POND) - event data extracted from the VEBSN; May 2002 - present
oFTP (ODC Volumes) - Quality Controlled full event data; 1988-1999
oE-mail - Web form for AutoDRM (format: GSE and SEED)
•Continuous data:
oFTP - VEBSN data 2002-present. experimental stage (format: only miniSEED)

Metadata (dataless SEED and instrument responses)

Current Developments

ORFEUS activities rely heavily on the contributions of participants and are, to a certain degree, coordinated within four working groups on the subjects of station siting, technical support, mobile equipment and seismological software.

•Working group 1 - Seismograph broadband station and siting standards
This working group is chaired by Josep Vila and maintains an station data base of all permanent and semi-permanent digital Broad-band (BB) seismograph stations in the European-Mediterranean area. Other issues are common standards for site, instrumentation and recording equipment; access to broad-band waveform data; defining an ORFEUS network; encourage "hidden" stations to open their data to the ORFEUS user community; propose new stations in areas with low BB coverage; support of local and national efforts to fill existing gaps with official scientific arguments and practical hints.

•Working group 2 - Technical support group for broad-band seismometer users
Intention is to gather and disseminate information on broadband seismic equipment (hardware and software), installation advice and guidelines, maintenance and data handling.

•Working group 3 - Mobile (broadband) stations
This working group is chaired by Paul Denton and aims at providing an inventory of mobile instrumentation in Europe and its surroundings, and experiments in which mobile equipment is used. Deployments of broad-band stations longer than one year are listed in ORFEUS wg1 on station siting

•Working group 4 - Seismological Software Library
Promote the availability of relevant seismological software and maintain the Seismological Software Library.
ORFEUS maintains different webpages with information about (recent) earthquakes
•Recent earthquakes
List with the last 30 earthquakes and links to waveform data
•Earthquake monitor
Map of Europe
Map of the world
•Earthquakes in the news
List with earthquakes that reached the news
For earthquake data you can go to the our data-page.

ORFEUS promotes the availability of relevant seismological software, therefore we:

Maintain the Seismological Software Library (SSL) with web- and ftp-site links and mirrors of relevant sites, and promote GNU licensing.
Promote and co-ordinate relevant software developments on OO programming, data exchange and routine a nalysis, web applications (XML, etc.) within the seismological community in Europe (see also the software working group).

ORFEUS provides no warrant and cannot take responsibility for the quality of the software. Users are urged to refer appropriately to the developer(s) and forward bugs, improvements, comments to the software developer and ORFEUS so others can also benefit from your findings. If you have new software you would like to share with the community, please, contact us.
