11th Canadian Conference On Earthquake Engineering
JULY 21-24 2015

The west coast of British Columbia is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most earthquake prone regions in the world. We are at the collision of two of the largest tectonic plates on the planet. The risks of a major damaging earthquake along BC’s west coast are greater than anywhere else in Canada as we face seismic hazards from four distinct sources. Shallow crustal and deeper sub-crustal events are our most frequent occurrences along with regular events from the Queen Charlotte transform fault. We are also facing the next mega-thrust from the Cascadia Subduction Zone which can cause a subduction earthquake as powerful as those that recently struck Chile and Japan with the attendant tsunami. These earthquakes could potentially cause severe damage and loss of life.
The focus of the 11th Canadian Conference on Earthquake Engineering is on identifying the risks we are facing, sharing the latest research and advances in seismic engineering and knowledge and encouraging and facilitating engineering practice that will enable us to prepare, protect, mitigate and recover. Please join us in beautiful Victoria, the capital city of British Columbia, located on Vancouver Island. Experience nature and networking, engage with colleagues and locals, and leave feeling inspired and informed.

Abstracts and papers are invited on a wide range of topics related to planning, designing, defining and response to seismic hazards.

Welcome

On behalf of the Canadian Association for Earthquake Engineering/L’Association canadienne du génie parasismique and the local Organising Committee, I am delighted to invite you to beautiful Victoria, British Columbia, Canada for the 11th Canadian Conference on Earthquake Engineering from 21-24 July 2015.
Our conference theme is “Facing Seismic Risk.” The conference theme recognizes that seismic risk reduction is a multifaceted task, one that brings earthquake engineers, seismologists, social scientists, government authorities and others together to address issues that concern both new and existing infrastructure, seismology, social and economic aspects, as well as earthquake preparedness, relief efforts and post-disaster planning. This Conference will bring together practitioners, researchers and educators from around the world who are engaged in earthquake engineering. We are planning an inspirational program in true Canadian tradition, and the sessions to be developed, encompassing seismic hazards, engineering, societal planning and response, facility performance, codes and standards, will address this theme.
Victoria, “the City of Gardens,” is one of the world’s most liveable cities, and one of the most popular tourism destinations in Canada. This is the first opportunity for Victoria to host a Canadian Conference on Earthquake Engineering and we will be delighted if you decide to join us in 2015 and share with us your knowledge and experience with topics related to the theme of our conference.

We hope that 11th Canadian Conference on Earthquake Engineering will be a catalyst to bring participants with similar interests together, stimulate interest, encourage cooperation, result in new friendships and renew the existing ones. We look forward to greeting you in sunny Victoria in July 2015
